How to Watch British TV Abroad

The UK is a major culture exporter, still producing some of the best content in the world. Unfortunately it’s locked for people outside the UK… If the BBC would be smart they’d introduce a subscription model at say $10 a month like Netflix or Amazon, which would give them more money to produce great content… but it seems that is a step to far at this time.

So, whether you’re a Brit abroad, an English speaker or someone wanting to study English there needs to be another way to watch British TV through the internet… fortunately, there is…

Now I’m aware that by publishing this I might encourage the people that want to stop us having access, but it seems that proxies work quite well, so let’s use them for now.

There are different proxy services, some paid for, some free… A popular and good paid service is Tunnel Bear, www.tunnelbear.com — it has apps for most major platforms, but the one I want to talk about and use myself is a great one called Hola and it’s free on desktop computers (free trial on iOS and Android, then paid… www.hola.org

Here’s how to get it and use it in 12 easy steps. I find this service works well, sometimes it needs a bit of refreshing or clearing the cache or browsing history, but that’s a small price to pay…

  1. Go to www.hola.org and get the Google chrome extension and install it

2. Once installed you’ll see the flame, click on that…

3. Now you choose where you want to go and where you are surfing from (this works for German TV, French TV *why you wanna watch that???* and anything else that has location blockers… We want UK BBC:

4. Just ignore the halloween photos… choose iPlayer in the top menu

5. Here we are, you want to choose categories now, I chose documentaries…

6. Sometimes Hola doesn’t work, but don’t worry, we can fix that…

7. You can try and reload the proxy, it can be that the one being used is on a blacklist already or that your browsing data is visible…

8. If all that fails, you need to clear your cache like this…

9. Clear your browsing data:

10. This means it works, now… tell a little white lie:

11. Sometimes you’ll see this, just say yes…

12. Welcome to British TV, no ads… and lots of interesting programmes, gotta love having a TV licence right?

This will work for itv.com channel4.com and all the other channels that have a media player. Check www.radiotimes.com for current TV listings…

Enjoy your TV!
